Week 30: RTSxShmup game, IndieCadeEU and Pico-8 doodles

IndieCadeEU was really cool!

Good stuff happened this week! The army herding game has a new shiny main mechanic that I like a lot, there’s been some Pico-8 doodling and I went to IndieCade Europe and it was amazing.

Here is the Pico-8 doodling of the week, with a live-coding gif too!

Both Tuesday and Wednesday were spent implementing a new main feature to the king game. Namely, selecting units, giving them movement orders and making them (and only them) shoot at the cursor. The game is now basically a mix between a RTS and a bullet-hell and next week, if all goes well, rogue-light elements will be added as well.

The army selecting and moving is very much inspired of my experience as a kid with Age Of Empires 2. Back then I would just cheat and make huge armies and controlling all these units and make them fight felt really good. So that’s what I wanted to reproduce and I think I did a pretty good job of it! To fit the style of the game better, the units don’t take perfectly straight path to their exact formation position but slightly randomized ones to their approximate position. This way, the units feel less like robots.

On a side note, I am planning to try and have a super early version of the game uploaded to Itch.io in the next two weeks so I can start getting feedback as early as possible.

Thursday was mostly spent on having a cleaner build ready for IndieCadeEU which was the next day.

And then IndieCadeEU happened.

To put it simply, it went exactly as I wanted it to go. I went to a few talks, I played a bunch of indie games I never played before and the best part: I met and hung out with a lot of very cool people.

I also had the occasion to show my games and the king game prototype to quite a few people. They were pretty into Pixel Session Vol.1 and for the prototype, my main take-away is that I need to make things clearer visually, as in what’s friendly, what’s not and where’s my character. The controls seemed to be alright though, which is good.

I had a great time and I really want to go to more events like this one in the future!

Week 30 was a good week!

Next week, I’m cleaning up the visuals of the king game and finally starting on in-game progression (I did figure out what I want with that last week). There’ll be Pico-8 stuff.

Have a nice week!

Take care!
